The Scrum Master helps a team work well inside the Scrum framework. The Agile Coach transforms how an entire organisation leads and works. They're different levels of intervention, not variants of the same role.

The clearest sign you need an Agile Coach and not a Scrum Master: the teams run Scrum correctly but the business results don't improve.

Can the same person be a Scrum Master and an Agile Coach?
Technically yes, but in practice the roles rarely overlap well. The Scrum Master has to be inside the team day to day; the Agile Coach works at system level and needs distance to see the whole. Doing both at once usually means doing both by halves.
Does an Agile Coach need a Scrum Master certification?
It isn't required, but it's useful. Knowing Scrum from the inside helps the Agile Coach diagnose more precisely. What they do need is training in coaching, systemic facilitation and practice with real teams — which goes beyond any Scrum Master certification.
Does the Agile Coach replace the Scrum Master?
No. They're complementary roles operating at different levels. The Agile Coach can train the Scrum Masters, design the system they work in and measure their impact — but doesn't replace their function within the team.
